Backpack/Bag for a Laptop

Postby Rik Bitter » Wed Jun 06, 2018

I need a new backpack for my laptop. My new job requires I tote a computer with me nearly everyday so I need something to put it in. I looked at a few bags at the local big box office supply store and wasn't very impressed with what I saw. Fortunately, the internet has a nearly limitless selection. Unfortunately, everything looks good in pictures, and it's hard to judge something like this without putting your hands on it.

So, I thought I'd check with the BS hive-mind and see if anyone had any recommendations. Here's my critera...

1) QUALITY CONSTRUCTION. This is the most important thing to me. I wast something bulletproof. (not literally) I'm rough on bags and it needs to be able to stand up to the 250+ lbs gorrilla slinging it around on a daily basis. Padding around the laptop compartment is a must.

2) Size. It needs to be able to hold a full sized laptop. (approx 17" x 9.5" x 1.5") It should also have plenty of room for some books and papers plus a first aid kit and peripherals for the laptop

3) Style. I'm open to almost anything. I like backpacks because they leave your hands free, but I might consider a messenger bag or briefcase style too.

4) Price. I'd like to come in around $100 or less, but I'll pay more if the quality is there.

maxpedition all the way. I've gone completely over to their backpacking system for my laptop and gun bags and will never look back. And they're indestructible. I literally toss mine around (not with the LT in it) on concrete or the gravel at our church just for grins. I've put their stuff through the test big time. And there's the addon's. Tons of accessories for everything! THEY ROCK!

all of our field people end up buying the Swiss gear backpacks.

have not heard much about them and they keep using them so guess that is an endorsement.

I've had a Wenger (Swiss Gear) Synergy backpack since 2007. I stuffed it full of textbooks and a laptop for four years of engineering school (easily 40+ pounds in there most days) and have carried a laptop and miscellaneous junk around almost daily for seven years after that. One of the arm straps is holding on by a thread. When it finally fails, I'll buy another.

If your laptop is physically 17" long it might be a tight squeeze though. My 15.4" nominal laptop is about 15" long and has maybe 1.5" to spare inside the backpack. There are reviews stating a 17" nominal laptop fits though.

^^ I have the weekender convertible. Went to AK for 12 days with it. A little over your price range, but really durable. More pockets than a family of kangaroos.

Does anyone have any experience with Condor bags? They may be a little too tacticool for the office but I saw a few things that might fit the bill. Amazon reviews seem kind of hit or miss.

Current Frontrunners:

-- ebags Professional Flight Laptop Backpack. - Very stylish and I like how the compartments open fully to lay flat.

--Maxpedition Kodiak Gearslinger - Great reviews for durability and lots of room. Dig the single strap design.

Its a little expensive but I really like my backpack! Easy fold told to go through security without taking the laptop out. Also has been holding up very well!

I like Maxpedition too.

But, I'd also look at ones with wheels that you can push or pull around.

I like the Swiss Gear back packs. I have used the linked bag for about 6 or 7 years, and it is only now showing signs of wear. I bring it back and forth to work daily. It has been on at least 60 business trips, shoved through x-ray machines at airport security, thrown under the airplane seat in front of me, kicked by me throughout each flight, thrown in the back of rental cars and taxis with luggage rolling around on top of it, shoved through crowded trains/subways, this bag has seen very heavy use.
It has a lot of padding around the laptop compartment. While I have not given it the drop test, I would think it could easily handle falling off of your shoulders without damaging the laptop.
It is a little expensive, but I think it is worth every penny.

Having used a laptop bag that fell apart, I did like the pocket it had, but i think a small case in a regular bag that you like is best. I dont remember the brand

Hmm.. let's stick with what they're doing in schools and use a clear bag..

Seriously, swissgear is durable but bulky. If you're going tacticool the maxpedition will do but most people will think you're former military. Also depends on what extras you have.

Otherwise I dig this one.. https://www.amazon.com/Backpack-BRINCH-Anti-tear-Water-resistant-Knapsack/dp/B06XT6PH6G/ref=sr_1_39?ie=UTF8&qid=1528755599&sr=8-39&keywords=laptop+backpack
