Sonic Salve To Soothe The Somber Soul

Postby Rik Bitter » Wed Apr 25, 2018

The only thing I like better than a good alliteration is listening to music. I'll listen to almost anything provided it's not some corporate, over-produced piece of pop cow poo. Anything from Punk to Classical, Swing to Gospel, I'll give it all a try. Lately I seem to be in a bit of a musical rut. I'm looking for something different, something outside the mainstream or simply just not designed for mass consumption.

I thought it might be fun to start a thread where people could post links to their favorite little-known artists or songs. The only rule is that it should not be something that most people would instantly recognize. deep cuts, obscure genres or artists are all fair game. If you know anything about the artist or song that might be interesting please include that in your post too.

I'll start us off.

I don't know much about this band and they don't seem to be active anymore. The singer is Cissy Redgwick who seems to have something of a following in the electro-swing world. I really like the video they put together, it has sort of a Tarantinoesque vibe to it. It's the kind of song I could definately see him using in one of his movies, behind an over-the-top action scene.

Video posting tips:

To get the thumbnail to display properly in the post for YouTube videos make sure you:

-- copy the link from the URL bar at the top of the browser.
-- Don't use a link from video that's in a playlist. Re-search for the song click directly on the video
-- remove the "s" from "https" in the link.

A few years back I went to a Robben Ford show at The Grand theater in Wilmington, DE. The opening act that night was a three piece Blues/Roots Rock band I had never heard of called "Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band" and they put on a fantastic show. The sound is simple and stripped down. Reverend J. Peyton plays the slide guitar and sings, his wife Breezy helps with the singing and plays rhythm on a washboard. Their drummer Max uses a simple kit utilizing a suitcase as the bass drum, a 5 gallon bucket, a snare and a small splash cymbal. (They claim to be the only rock band with a bucket endorsement) I got to meet the Rev and Breezy at the intermission while they were selling hats, t-shirts, CDs and broken, scorched pieces of show used washboards. They could not have been more charming. If you ever see them coming to a venue near you, do yourself a favor and go check them out. I promise a good time.

They ascribe to the "lets get some friends together and do this" school of video making.

DOUBLE SHOT cause these guys are awesome!

I saw this on another forum and it is quite appealing for obvious reasons. I always liked this movie for obvious reasons.

Been stuck in an 80's mood for a while now.

Can't figure out how to inbed the video.

How about some Jazz and Nawlins Funk mixed with Cajun Zydeco. The Meters sing about the New Orleans Audubon Zoo. Love the references about our food. Its hard to find a good youtube of this song. They all Axe for you.

" ...something outside the mainstream or simply just not designed for mass consumption." G.G. Allin (Shock Punk) might be to outside the mainstream. To be clear, I'm NOT a fan! Website is down, just Goggle...

OK, this is really a thing. It's called Chap Hop and it's two main practitioners, Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer & Professor Elemental have a perpetual "beef" with each other. Good fun.

That first video.....wow. I guess it is an artist thing but I noticed the floor texture and wear first. Then the holes in the guitar from playing and the wear on the mandolin...So much time and the tales these things have seen. Thanks for the video.

Not sure if millions of YouTube views disqualifies Ronald Jenkees. Dude's a hoot...

Guy OD'd when he was like only 28. When I first heard him, I thought it was one of those old African-American blues dudes. Guitar starts playing itself around the 5:30 mark  ...

Plastic Land

A little known psychedelic band from the 80's and home of beer. Milwaukee Wisconsin.

This is a cover but a fave of mine.

"Office skills" is a must if you like the more obscure singles and comes with the sound of actual typewriters being smashed.
