Google says it's a "floor" I'm not sure what that is but it must be true.

I'd still smoke some incense sticks with it 8-)

BTW, what were you doing in the closet of that old house anyway?

It looks a little like one of those rotating ball joint-based vises that sculptors use to hold a block to do 3D sculpting on.

I think you're on the right track, The base will let you hold anything at an infinitely variable angle in all axis but there doesn't seem to be a way to lock it in position so it's probably not for precision milling. The relatively small cylindrical jaws must mean it's for small items and it gives lots of clearance to get your hands in there. it's got holes in the surface, most likely to hold some kind of dog or clamp.

My guess is it's for metal engraving or marquetry.

That is a nice ball vise. You could teach yourself engraving/making hobo nickels with it. I have a similar one.

When I am covering athletic events there is a medal engraver there who has 2 of those. 1 for him 1 for his son. He said he invented that thing way back when, he is now about 85 years old.
They clamp a medal (about the size of a 1 ounce silver round) to the top of the jaws with small stops and then carve the kids name and other fancy details into the medal.
the ball can spin and rotate every which way in order to get the cutting tool into whatever position they need.
Now accepting direct payments through Wells Fargo bank and TD bank. Other payments options check, MO, cash
Please remind me for feedback if I have forgotten. I will also remind you if you have forgotten. Thanks for the awesome forum we have here.
