Came across our first snake in the chicken pen a few days ago. Went to the feed store and bought a couple of pounds of Snake repellent. Sprinkled it all around and no sign so far.

Also, our 4th hen just began laying today. Have a total of eight and the rest should be starting soon. Beautiful ladies and wonderful eggs.

Looks like a plain old harmless corn snake to me. WTF is a ground rattler?

Yep, most likely a corn snake. They do a lot of good, when they are alive.

Somehow I missed this but a rattlesnake will have one of these on its tail.

Also as a pit viper it will have a pronounced triangular head like this.

All pit vipers are poisonous so avoid those heads rattle or not.

A thieving snake is back gettin my hen eggs again  . I have Seramas now, a small Bantam breed. The eggs are pretty small, about 1/2 size of normal egg.
I've picked up some eggish shaped rocks and put in their nest boxes. I'm hoping snake will swallow a rock.

I had a backyard flock for years and never had a problem with snakes. Most of the culls came from hawks and foxes.

It's springtime. You might end up with one of the hens brooding over those rocks.

The snake didn't swallow the egg decoy rocks yet but the hens didn't like them at all ...not broody at all with them
I guess the rocks pi$$ed 'em off- they laid their eggs out in the dirt

We went to the local Hobby Lobby store and bought some ceramic eggs. 7 foot chicken snake swallowed 3 of them. I will post up a couple pictures tomorrow.

We've had a dozen or so chickens here at home for about 8 years. Never had any problem with snakes.

I hear you. We never really had any issues either until this spring......the first after significant flooding. Maybe the critters got all moved around and we are seeing more.

I have a 3 foot long garter snake living in a hole by the front door. My neighbor was bringing something over and she called and said she can't get near the door, this mean snake is hissing at her LOL I laughed and told her to walk on by it is harmless.

Last week I got out of my truck and moved a garter snake that was just laid out across my drive. My daughter still thinks i am superman bc i picked up a huge King snake that was in our carport and walked him over to the pasture and let him go on his way. And once I was walking around the yard barefoot and stepped on another big king snake that was hiding in the tall clovers. They are my friends bc i cant stand mice. :(

While not a total country or city boy I have to ask; what did you do with the snake and did you salvage the ceramic eggs?
