More Tether accounting hijinx

As of Mar 31, 2021:

Tether market cap: $42.35 billion.
Tether cash reserves: $1.24 billion (2.9% of mcap)

Increase in Bahamas' non-resident foreign currency deposits for the month of March: $1.311 billion.

Coincidence? I think not.

#Crypto exchanges @binance, @HuobiGlobal, @OKEx now blocked on #China social media in Chinese and English. Weibo searches say “according to the related laws and regulations, the results of this search are not available.” For Baidu, “sorry, no relevant results found”.

Hong Kong-based #crypto exchange @bitfinex also now blocked both on Weibo and Baidu

Ex-commodities chairman Timothy Massad calls for more regulation of tether, stablecoins

That March report revealed some opaque uses of the money that was invested into the coins. According to the report, Tether held 13% of its assets in secured loans and 15% in commercial paper, or unsecured short-term debt, Massad noted.

“We have no idea what kind of loans those are or who they are to” and “we don’t know what kind of paper they’re buying,” he said. “It’s all a concern, so I think we need more disclosure, here.”

Tether’s commercial paper disclosure places it among global giants

But this reported accumulation has largely gone unnoticed on Wall Street, according to several of the biggest players in the market including bank traders, analysts and money market funds.

“We’ve got lots of inquiries and heard lots of discussion, but have not seen any active participation,” said Deborah Cunningham at Federated Hermes.

“Until last week we hadn’t really heard of them,” said a trader at a large bank. “It was news to us.”

@jimcramer

Take a look at this: https://coinlib.io/coin/BTC/Bitcoin

In the last 24 hours, ALL Fiat money flows come to $1,181.62 million. Tether comes to $5,650 million.

#Tether *demand* is 4.78 TIMES Fiat *demand*

Ergo, if Tether dies, #bitcoin drops 4.78 times, or ~79% in DOLLAR price.

El Salvador passes its Bitcoin Law — and it’s a Tether scam

The prize here would be a small country’s stash of genuine US dollars. At least $150 million will be extracted via a trust that’s being set up as an interface between dollars and bitcoins.

Strike, the payment network that El Salvador is working with, runs on tethers — a barely-backed substitute dollar token used in the crypto trading markets — and the “dollars” in a Strike account in El Salvador are actually tethers. Fake dollars go in, real dollars leak out.

I admire your work @jimcramer & having the guts to go at #TetherScam.

@APompliano, @brockpierce, @wolfofwallst & @RaoulGMI have all said they know how dangerous #Tether is, but they choose not to tell you so they can keep making money.

Let the world see!

Tether only has 13 employees, making it the most valuable company on a per employee basis in the entire world.

In the early 2000’s, Bernie Madoff’s infamous Ponzi Scheme held the record with only 28 employees.

Less Employees = Less Whistleblowers.

Tether is setting a New Standard for Transparency, that is Untethered from facts

Tether is getting significantly more reporting by mainstream financial sources, such as the Financial Times, CNBC, Bloomberg, etc. Their fraud is too big to hide anymore. Seeing Tether being talked about on CNBC was unreal.

It’s happening.

Tether attracts mainstream media scrutiny over its commercial paper

If Tether’s reserve composition stays the same as it disclosed in May, Tether will hold over $50 billion in commercial paper.

Only one entity holds more: the United States’ largest bank, JPMorgan Chase.

Tether controlling more commercial power than JPMorgan stretches believability.

The Tether Scandal: The Biggest Threat To The Crypto-Ecosystem

Final Thoughts

I’m a huge fan of Crypto and would’ve much rather preferred if this market was organic. Sadly, human greed took over, and we’ve since watched Tether grow into one of the largest frauds in history.

Crypto Lode of $100 Billion Stirs U.S. Worry Over Hidden Danger

At the end of May, the total market capitalization of stablecoins, which include ones offered by crypto firms Tether and Centre, broke $100 billion.

But in recent weeks, lawmakers and officials from the Federal Reserve and the administration have expressed alarm both in public and private that some consumers won’t actually be protected should one of the firms not have the backing they purport to have. They also say the growing size of stablecoins has created a situation where huge amounts of U.S. dollar-equivalent coins are being exchanged without touching the U.S. banking system, potentially blinding regulators to illicit finance.

Crypto Crime Cartel: Tether using its stablecoin scam to exploit El Salvador

Tether’s hooks are into the digital asset industry in surprising and ever-deepening ways. This makes sense. Public attention currently revolves around BTC, and the value of BTC is entirely dependent upon the printing of USDT. On top of that, a crop of exchanges are the consistent recipients of each new issuance of USDT—Bitfinex, Huobi, FTX, Binance—which is to say nothing of the Blockstreams and Strikes of the world, who propagandize about Tether and invent new ways to exploit the false belief that it is backed in order to enrich a precious few at the top of the pyramid. Blockstream isn’t just lending Tether a hand, it is in fact one of many hands belonging to Tether—and they’re all washing one another.

Is Tether a Black Swan?

Tether’s (presumed) fractional reserve issuance creates hidden leverage at the “base layer” of the crypto markets. In my opinion, the systemic risk caused by this is not acceptable. The fact that most actors in the market simply don’t acknowledge the risk, and at times go out of their way to defend Tether instead of holding it properly accountable, speaks to the immaturity of the market and its inability to self-regulate.
